Student INFORMATION AND POLICIES

Everything you should read before you enrol

Student Information and Policies

Everything on this page applies before you enrol as well as after, so please read it first. The full detail is in the ASSI Student Handbook, which you can download below.

Documents to download

  • ASSI Information Pack – what the training involves, what it costs, how long it takes and how to enrol.
  • ASSI Student Handbook – your rights and our obligations, the full refund policy, assessment, support and privacy. You confirm you have read this when you enrol.
  • ASSI Privacy Policy – how we collect, use and store your personal information.

Fees and refunds

The course fee is $1,595 in total, paid in two stages – $900 on enrolment and $695 when you are ready to start the practical assessments. Credit Transfer is free. Replacement documents are $25. Full details, including the refund policy, are on our Fees and Refunds page and in the Student Handbook.

Support while you study

You contact your trainer through the message system in the student interface, or by email, and we aim to reply within two business days. Your trainer checks your progress at least monthly. Help is available with report writing, study skills and using the student interface, and if you need more help with reading, writing or numeracy we can provide extra support or refer you to a program.

If study, work or personal circumstances are affecting you, please talk to us. We will help where we can or point you to services that can.

Reasonable adjustment

Reasonable adjustments change how you are assessed, not the standard you have to reach. Examples include extra time, oral rather than written answers, assistive technology, or a different arrangement for a practical task. Adjustments are agreed with you in writing. If a disability or health condition affects how or when you can study, tell us before you enrol and we will discuss the options.

Access and equity

ASSI is committed to equal opportunity and a learning environment free from discrimination. Everyone who meets the enrolment requirements is welcome, regardless of age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, cultural or linguistic background, religion, disability, pregnancy, marital status, family responsibilities or any other attribute protected by law. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are offered culturally safe support. Harassment and bullying are not accepted.

Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer

Both are available to every student. Recognition of Prior Learning recognises skills and knowledge you already have from work, life experience or training. Credit Transfer applies where you have already completed the same unit, or an equivalent one, with any Registered Training Organisation – it is free and needs no evidence beyond your certificate or statement of attainment. See our Recognition of Prior Learning page.

Unique Student Identifier

You need a USI to be issued with a nationally recognised qualification. It is free at usi.gov.au and takes a few minutes. We cannot issue your qualification without a verified USI.

Licensing

Most states and territories require investigators to hold a licence. Licences are issued by government regulators, not by ASSI, and completing this course does not guarantee you will be granted one. Regulators also check your age, identity, criminal history and whether you are a fit and proper person. If you have any concern about your eligibility, check with your regulator before you enrol. See our licensing page.

Who delivers your training

ASSI delivers all of its own training and assessment. We do not use any third party to deliver training or assessment on our behalf.

Privacy and your records

ASSI collects your personal information to enrol you, deliver training and assessment, issue your qualification and meet government reporting requirements. We handle it in line with the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles. We will not give it to anyone else without your written consent except where the law requires it – for example we report training data to the National Centre for Vocational Education Research, and share information with ASQA and the USI Registrar.

You can ask to see or correct your personal information and records at any time. Assessment evidence is kept securely for at least 2 years after your result, and qualification records for 30 years. The full detail is in our Privacy Policy.

If something is not right

Talk to us first. Most things are sorted out quickly that way. The full complaints and appeals process is set out in section 10 of the Student Handbook, which you can download above.

Changes to your course

If anything changes that affects you – fees, delivery, staff arrangements or the qualification itself – we will tell you in writing as soon as possible.
